Pet Rock

No one sold an idea like Gary Dahl did. Being the inventor of Pet Rock, he made millions overnight with his repackaged Mexican beach stones. He sold them in their own hole-punched carry cases and housed them like live pigeons. The marketing idea was considered genius as a war-torn USA needed something to smile about back in 1970s. Today, pet rock continues to be a gag gift favorite.

OBJECTIVE

Re-introduce the brand by creating a new web layout with integrated e-commerce for online sales on a WordPress child theme. And to also re-brand the Pet Rock merchandise with a new logo design that spells out fun, wit and creativity.

The logo was originally rounder and softer looking. I wanted to translate it for the 21st century. With a modern approach, I've redesigned it with jagged edges to graphically represent rock textures. Once the logo was finalised, I looked at the original Pet Rock website and compared it with other online novelty e-commerce stores.

This helped me take note of the placement of call to action buttons, what colours are most effective with high click rate and what information should be present above the fold to name a few. During this time, I've had online training on how to build effective websites that really helped this project.
